Lamborghini Countach
5000 Quattrovalvole

In the summer of 1986 I was watching the SCCA races at Summit Point Motorsports Park when the fellow seated next to me made note that a yellow Lamborghini Countach was pulling into the parking lot just behind the bleachers where we were seated. This was the very first Countach either of us had seen in person.

I remember being in awe witnessing the driver and passenger open those famous scissor-style doors, exiting the Countach as if they were rock stars. Little did I know that, in the not too distant future, hoards of owners of boy-racer Honda Civics to those owners of Corvettes whose hearts were filled with envy would be retro-fitting their cars with copies of the Countach-style doors.

But the 1986 Countach 5000QV (quattrovalvole) nameplate represents much more than innovative door actuation. It also sports that instantly recognizable, wedge-shaped body styled by Bertone and a vastly upgraded V-12 engine configuration, enlarged to 5.2 liters with increased breathing efficiency from the new, 4-valves per cylinder “quattrovalvole” configuration. Horsepower was boosted to north of 450, enabling the car to accelerate from a standing start to 62 mph in under 5 seconds.
